Bronze and Bronze

The EOC in Ventspils in Latvia offered a lot of challenges, tight competitions and quick curves...sometimes there were too many of them on the way to the controls as well.

As we arrived to Latvia, my body wasn't exactly prepared for any competitions. Big amounts of training during the last weeks forced me to take care of my muscles first and I knew it wouldn't really be possible to take the gold in the sprint. But I became fourth anyway, and could have avoided at least one mistake if the controls had been in the middle of the circles...

After the fourth place, I also decided that if I wanted to take the gold in the middle distance I shouldn't run the long. It was a hard decision to take but really wice as I hadn't run any long distances this year and I knew my knee would not like it either. So the next two days went by cheering for the others and by killing time.

In the middle qualification I ran like an elk and orienteered like a navigator. It was so detailed and fun! Well, under the pressure, in the final, my brains didn't function like that at all. I made too many curves all the time and one bigger mistake already in the beginning. I even made a little show on the public controls as I came to the second one first. I know, I'm a blond! My orienteering wasn't too smooth after that either, but I managed to keep the third place.

The amazing fact was that the other medalists were from Finland too, unbelievable. Of course, my plan was to take the highest place among us too, but it was still great to see the three Finnish flags going up at the same time!

I wasn't feeling myself too happy before the relay even though I was eager to take the gold with two new girls in the team, Katri and Merja (Heli decided not to start). The gafflings were big and the course setter had succeeded again. The only one who didn't succeed was me. I didn't understand the countours and made several mistakes. Luckyly, we became third, but it would have been nice to share the bronze with the second team which was right behind us.

Now, it's time to start to search for the top form. I hope I've still got enough time left before the WOC. Well, I'm still not going to push too hard as it's much more fun to enjoy the sports and not to try to be perfect all the time.

Jukola-relay in Tampere is the next big event and our team has big chances to win the gold this year too. I'll just have to make a few good trainings in similar terrains during these couple of weeks so that we have a reason to party again!
